Why Do We Read the Bible?

This question was asked by one of the pastors at my church during one of his sermons and it made me stop and think. Why do I read the Bible? What makes me come to it each day, sit down and think for long periods of time about what it’s telling me?

The Bible is God’s word. It’s the place where God makes plain what is true. As a Christian, I cannot live in the way that God wants if I do not continually submit myself under the authority of His word. I must come to the Bible humbly, ready to learn from it, be convicted by it, and become more like Christ because of it. I must come to the Bible desperately because apart from it, I’m starving myself. If what the Bible does is feed us and nourish us, then everything else we consume is junk food and is killing us. Not only that, but the Bible transforms how we view ourselves and how we view the world. It shows us our need for a savior. The gospel is offensive, and it should be, otherwise it’s not the gospel. It should show us that we are sinful people that need help, and can only find that help in Christ and through His Word.

We cannot be saved apart from knowing Christ...how else are we supposed to know God besides hearing directly from Him in the Bible?

Read the Bible, read it well, and read it prayerfully, humbly and desperately.
